Puppy Update & My New Kitchen Floor
Duke & Fiona (handeling the model training perfectly)

I have to say a word about my new kitchen floor (above).  My husband and I have a condition commonly know as "paralysis by analysis", plus we can never agree on anything for the home without it being prefaced by a lengthy debate. Since we moved into our house we have lived with what is essentially a sub floor in our kitchen (fortunately sub floors in older homes were made of pine planks). Sanded and hit with a couple of  coats of polyurethane it looked good for about a year, but could not withstand the traffic of children and pets. Ten years later, it was pretty ugly not to mention if you crossed it with bear feet you were likely to end up with a sliver.  Not wanting to spend a lot of money on a new floor my husband begged me to have an open mind and consider vinyl tiles.  I about gagged at the thought of it, but agreed to go with him to the nearest Lowes.  To my surprise the world of vinyl peel and stick tiles has greatly expanded and we had several nice, inexpensive options to choose from.  I agreed to give it a try. We choose a wide dark plank that complements our 1920's kitchen.  The entire project took less than a day and the tiles continue to look great.  It was one of those "why didn't we do this long ago" moments.

Fiona at 9 wks

Chasing around a puppy makes it very hard to get any work done, but she is a true delight and already enjoys sleeping on my feet while I blog.  She is beginning to look like Duke who of course, is just about the best older brother a puppy could have.

Deck The Halls

Every year I tell myself the same thing - I'm going to keep my holiday decorating to a minimum.  Then every year I begin pulling out the decorations I've collected and just can't resist displaying them.  Some pictures of the work in progress.......

Contemporary glass ornaments hanging from a chandelier
Vintage ceramic Santa in the corner cabinet

Tin tree (thrifted) on top of the bannister

Entry hall display
Lamps, hurricane lamps, candle sticks, reindeer & Santa, thrifted

The Pottery Barn Reindeer is thrifted
The red & green ornament is from Crate & Barrel {in stores now}

Trees in an antique wagon
Artwork, thrifted

The wagon is a family heirloom
The stars were rescued from a friend

The antique brass lamp (thrifted) is missing its crystals but perfect for hanging ornaments

Duke's Christmas Photo Shoot

I just wanted to get a photograph of the door decorated for Christmas, but somehow this afternoon's photo-shoot centered around Duke.

Getting tired!

My First Bow

It's tradition, when our boys come home for semester breaks we usually fly their respective college flags.  This year, in honor of my youngest son returning from a semester in Florence, Italy, I decided to make a bow in the Florentine colors of red and purple.  I must admit, I'm very pleased with it!

Happy Birthday Duke Kahanamoku

Duke, my favorite model, is about to turn three this weekend!  Born on 8/08/08 {otherwise known as the first day of the Beijing summer olympics} he is the number one, top dog in our book.  We toyed with naming him after another champion, Michael Phelps, but Duke is a much better name for a golden retriever don't you think? His middle name "Kahanamoku" is a tribute to our family's love of the surf, surfing, sand { golden}, and competition.  Birthday presents, of course! Here are a few ideas on what to get the dog that has everything...

Linguini With Mussels Fra Diavolo

My husband found this recipe on the internet and it was absolutely delicious.  It had just the right amount of spices to give it that Fra Diavolo zing and the fresh fennel was a perfect addition to the dish. We served it over whole wheat linguini with a hearty olive bread and a bottle of Scarbolo Pinot Grigio.  I'm not sure who to give credit for the recipe, but credit it deserves!

What could have made it better?  One of these incredible pieces of Italian Pottery!

My Debt Ceiling

All this talk about the debt ceiling has me contemplating my own ceilings several of which are in dire need of repair.  As the conscientious consumer that I am (ahem) I will, and let me be clear, not go into debt for my ceilings!  I found a simple and inexpensive solution to add depth and interest to my overhead walls, colorful paint.  It hides flaws common in older homes and often makes a small room seem larger.  I've used painted ceilings with great success in my bathrooms and would love to do something grand like the ceilings pictured below in a larger room.  But first I have to reduce whats currently over my head and scrape off that ugly popcorn!

Love the color and the overhead ceiling fan

Notice how the color carries your eye around the space

I could spend hours in this serene space
